Troops have neutralised 19 bandits in border communities within Shanono Local Government Area, Kano State, following repeated incursions by bandits from neighbouring Katsina State.

However, two soldiers and one local vigilante were killed during the operation.

A statement by Captain Babatunde Zubairu, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, indicated that troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation MESA, are currently in Shanono Local Government Area dislodging the bandits and their elements.

The statement said the troops, led by 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, are containing the bandits’ incursion and protecting vulnerable communities.

It reads: “Following a tip-off on the movement of bandits around Ungwan Tudu, Ungwan Tsamiya, and Goron Dutse axis of Shanono Local Government Area at about 5:00 pm on 1 November 2025, troops of 3 Brigade, supported by other security agencies, raided the bandits and pushed them out of Shanono, resulting in a heavy firefight.

“It was further confirmed that the bandits, who sustained several casualties, arrived on motorcycles.

“The intervention commenced when gallant troops swiftly responded to reports of bandit movements in the area.

“Own troops deployed at Tsaure engaged the bandits, which led to an exchange of fire. The troops successfully pursued the bandits and recovered several motorcycles and two mobile phones from the criminals.

“It was confirmed that 19 bandits were neutralised during the encounter. Regrettably, two soldiers and one local vigilante paid the supreme sacrifice.”*

The statement added: “Additionally, further operations are ongoing in the general area to protect vulnerable communities, which have been prone to cattle rustling by the bandits. The Nigerian Army urges citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
