The Lagos State Government has started a new round of payments to compensate residents affected by the Oworonshoki urban renewal project. The exercise is being handled by the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA).
The event took place at the Oloworo Palace in Oworonshoki, Kosofe Local Government Area, and was led by LASURA’s General Manager, Town Planner Oladimeji Animashaun, along with other officials.
Community leaders, traditional chiefs, representatives of Community Development Associations (CDAs) and Committees (CDCs), civil society groups, security agencies, journalists, and many residents were present.
According to Animashaun, this second phase was arranged for residents who missed the first enumeration so that everyone with valid claims can receive compensation as directed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“About a week ago, we paid those whose houses were demolished. Some people missed out and asked for another chance.
This second round is to make sure no one is left behind. The large turnout shows people now trust the government’s process,” he said.
He added that many residents were initially doubtful about the government’s promise to pay but changed their minds after seeing their neighbors receive compensation.
“Some thought it wasn’t real and planned to protest. But once they saw payments being made, they believed and came forward for verification,” Animashaun explained.
He assured residents that all legitimate claims would be processed and paid without delay.
