Russia says it is closely watching political developments in Nigeria following U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks hinting at possible American military intervention in the country.

Trump had, during a campaign rally on 1 November 2025, claimed that he had instructed the U.S. Department of Defense to prepare options for action in Nigeria to “protect Christian communities,” alleging widespread persecution.

The comment immediately drew global attention and diplomatic reactions.

In a statement released in Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia was “closely monitoring the situation in Nigeria” and urged the United States to respect international law and Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Zakharova described Trump’s remarks as “unconstructive and potentially destabilising,” warning that any attempt at unilateral military intervention in a sovereign African nation would violate the United Nations Charter.

“Russia reaffirms its commitment to the principles of non-interference and calls on all parties to prioritise dialogue and respect for Nigeria’s territorial integrity,” the statement read.

The Nigerian government swiftly dismissed Trump’s claims of religious persecution, stressing that recent security challenges in the country affected citizens of all faiths.

Officials also confirmed that diplomatic consultations were ongoing with Washington to clarify the U.S. president’s statement.

China also issued a similar caution against foreign interference, saying Nigeria’s internal affairs should be handled domestically and through legitimate regional mechanisms.

Analysts believe Moscow’s quick response underscores its growing strategic interest in Africa and its intent to counterbalance U.S. influence on the continent.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy and a key energy producer, has become a focal point in the geopolitical contest among global powers.

Meanwhile, Trump’s remarks have sparked criticism from human rights groups and religious leaders who accused him of exploiting Nigeria’s internal issues for political gain.

Observers warn that escalating rhetoric from foreign powers could strain Nigeria’s diplomatic relations and complicate its security cooperation with Western nations.
