International and local observers, alongside civil society organisations, have hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what they described as the peaceful, transparent, and well-managed conduct of the ongoing Anambra State Governorship Election.

The commendations were contained in a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Dayo Oketola.

According to the report, feedback from the INEC Situation Room indicated improved voter turnout compared to the 2021 polls, smooth accreditation using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), and a generally calm atmosphere across polling units.

Observers attributed the orderly conduct of the election to INEC’s improved logistics, early deployment of personnel and materials, and the leadership of the Commission’s Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN).

Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nkweke of the International Association of World Peace Advocates described the process as “peaceful and well-managed,” praising INEC officials for their professionalism.

“The process has been peaceful and well-coordinated. Accreditation is smooth, BVAS is functioning perfectly, and INEC officials are courteous and efficient,” Dr. Nkweke said while monitoring polling units in Awka.

He also lauded the conduct of security agencies, noting that “up to seven police officers were observed at some polling units, maintaining calm and order. Their conduct has been exemplary.”

Civil society groups also praised INEC for early deployment and adherence to election guidelines. Director of Programmes at Yiaga Africa, Ms. Cynthia Mbamalu, confirmed that voting commenced on time in several polling units, a development she described as “a reflection of INEC’s improved efficiency.”

“Materials and INEC officials arrived as early as 7:34 am in Amawbia, and voting commenced by 8:30 am as stipulated by law,” Mbamalu said.

Similarly, Dominic Okafor, representing Aguata Federal Constituency, expressed satisfaction after casting his vote. “INEC officials arrived on time, BVAS is working seamlessly, and voters are conducting themselves peacefully. This is the kind of progress Nigerians want to see,” he stated.

Chairman of Orumba South Local Government Area, Mr. Shedrack Azubuike, also noted that the election was well-organized, describing the atmosphere as “a model of how democracy should function.”

INEC Chairman, Professor Amupitan, reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to credible and transparent elections.
“Our duty is to the Nigerian people. INEC is committed to ensuring that every valid vote counts and that the process remains transparent and peaceful,” he said.
