President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian editors to exercise vigilance and responsibility in their reporting, stressing the media’s critical role in safeguarding democracy and national unity.
Delivering the opening address at the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ Annual Conference at the State House, Tinubu said the theme, “Democratic Governance and National Cohesion: The Role of Editors”, was a timely reminder of the influence of public discourse on nation-building.
“Throughout our history, journalism in Nigeria has been more than a profession. It has been an instrument of national awakening,” he said, noting that journalists had historically defended reason, dignity, and progress even under intimidation and military dictatorship.
“Their sacrifices are part of the foundation upon which our democracy rests today.”
The President warned that freedom was not self-sustaining and required constant vigilance.
“A democracy is sustained not only by elections and laws, but also by the integrity of public conversation. This is where your role becomes central and indispensable,” he said.
Highlighting the challenges posed by modern information technologies, Tinubu said, “Social media has made every citizen a potential publisher. Falsehood can take root before truth has time to speak. Verification must be your anchor; balance must be your principle and professional judgement must be your guide.”
He urged editors to report boldly yet truthfully, critiquing government policy with knowledge and fairness.
“Your aim must never be to tear down, but to help build a better society,” Tinubu added.
On governance, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic stability and equitable opportunity.
“We have undertaken reforms to place our economy on a strong and enduring footing. Growth must translate into real improvements in the daily lives of Nigerians,” he said.
He emphased collective responsibility, saying “Government, private sector, civil society, and the media all have roles to play in shaping a climate of reason and unity. The stories we tell ourselves influence the country we become.”
Tinubu wished delegates “constructive, thoughtful, and fruitful deliberations” and encouraged them to carry their responsibilities with purpose.
