In a momentous celebration marking six decades of excellence in sports journalism, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) conferred a prestigious honour on Samuel Olatunji Okuku during its 60th Anniversary Awards and Appeal Fund Ceremony held in Abuja.

The recognition, one of the highlights of SWAN’s Diamond Jubilee events, underscores Okuku’s unwavering commitment to the growth of Nigerian football and its next generation of talent.

For Okuku, founder of the renowned Tripple 44 Academy, the award is not just an accolade but a testament to decades of purposeful leadership, mentorship, and deep investment in grassroots player development and ethical engagement within Nigeria’s football ecosystem.

“This honour is bigger than me,” Okuku said in a reflective social media post after the ceremony. “It embodies the countless hours of work, belief in Nigeria’s youth and the power of football to transform lives.”

From Grassroots Vision to National Recognition

Born in Erinmope-Ekiti, Okuku’s journey in football began on dusty pitches far from the glare of professional stadia. What started as street football grew into a personal mission to nurture and elevate young talent — not just technically, but in character, discipline and professional mindset. Under his leadership, Tripple 44 Academy has emerged as one of Nigeria’s distinguished football academies, producing players who have transitioned into professional leagues both domestically and internationally. But the academy’s impact transcends sport: it has become a cradle for holistic personal development.

Honouring a Broader Community of Excellence

Okuku’s recognition at the SWAN @60 celebration occurred alongside a host of distinguished journalists and sports stakeholders whose contributions continue to shape national sporting discourse. Among the luminaries acknowledged were:

– Fred Edoreh – Two-time former Chairman of SWAN, Lagos Chapter, whose leadership helped steer local journalism excellence.
– Adewale Ajayi – Veteran Nigerian journalist based in Canada, known for impactful work with AIT and DBN, and for advancing Nigerian sports narratives abroad.
– Emeka Nwadike – Founder of The Sports Apprentice, Africa’s leading sports industry career mentorship platform, championing youth pathways beyond the pitch.
– Alloy Chukwuemeka – Journalist turned football administrator and Director at ABS Football Club (Nigeria National League), blending media insight with sporting governance.
– Femi Adetula – A seasoned sports production expert and media professional known for elevating the technical quality of sports broadcasting in Nigeria.

These figures represent the depth and diversity of talent vital to sports development — from reporting and mentorship to managerial roles within club football. Their collective impact reflects the interconnected nature of media, administration and grassroots sport.

SWAN’s Broader Legacy and Structural Support

The 60th Anniversary celebration also highlighted SWAN’s role in advancing professional standards in sports journalism and fostering strategic partnerships with key national stakeholders. In the lead-up to the awards, the National Sports Commission (NSC) publicly endorsed the Diamond Jubilee, commending SWAN’s role in promoting accountability and credible sports reporting nationwide particularly in an era challenged by misinformation.

A Call to Preserve Nigerian Football’s Narrative

In his acceptance remarks, Okuku did more than receive an award he issued a charge to the wider sporting community. He emphasised the indispensable role of principled journalism and authentic storytelling in preserving the heritage and future of Nigerian football. “In an era where content-creation often masks as journalism, true storytellers help build a legacy that outlives its authors,” Okuku noted. His message resonated deeply with industry veterans and young professionals alike reminding all that football’s narrative is shaped not only by what happens on the pitch but also by those who record and interpret it.

Looking Forward

As SWAN celebrates its Diamond Jubilee, the honours extended to Okuku and his peers represent more than recognition they spotlight the ongoing need to nurture leadership, ethics, and capacity within Nigeria’s sporting ecosystem. For Okuku, the mission continues: to expand opportunities for young Nigerians, fortify the pathways from ambition to professional excellence, and ensure that Nigerian football remains a vibrant platform for collective progress.
