The Super Eagles will now face DR Congo in the final playoff on Sunday, a match that will decide whether Nigeria qualifies for the 2026 World Cup. Chelle said the team is focused and ready to give their best in the crucial showdown.
Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has praised four Nigerian defenders after the team’s impressive 4-1 victory over Gabon in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff on Thursday.
Chelle highlighted the strong performance of Calvin Bassey, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Benjamin Fredrick, and Zaidu Sanusi.
According to him, these four players worked well together at the back and helped keep the team organised throughout the match, which was played in Rabat, Morocco.
Nigeria started the game confidently, with goals from Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke giving the Super Eagles control. Star striker Victor Osimhen added two more goals, making the win even more convincing. Gabon scored a late consolation goal, but it did not affect Nigeria’s dominance.
Speaking during his post-match interview, Chelle said:
“We conceded a goal in the last minute, but we also had a great chance to score again before the final whistle. This defence was new Bright, Benjamin, Calvin, and Zaidu and they all did well. The team was solid at the back, but we can still get better.”
Chelle also noted that the team is still improving under his leadership, and he believes the players will perform even stronger as they continue to work together.
