65 London businesses fined for not paying minimum wage

Government of the United Kingdom, UK, has listed and fined 65 London businesses which have been found to be paying staff below the minimum wage.

Some of the businesses are owing thousands of workers, local media reported.

Big concerns such as Hugo Boss, Cineworld and even Havering Council are included in the list covering nearly 500 businesses across the UK.

Adecco UK tops the London businesses failing to pay £436,887.95 to 3,356 workers.

Government is also reported to have repaid £6 million to around 42,000 workers, with nearly 500 employers receiving fines totalling £10.2 million for failing to pay their employees the National Minimum Wage.

MyLondon quoted Business Secretary Peter Kyle as saying: “Every worker deserves a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work, and this government will not tolerate rogue employers who short-change their staff.”

The culprit companies cut across many strata of businesses which include hotels, restaurants, retailers, nurseries, pharmacies and a law firm.

Clients such as Hilton, Radisson and Marriot, a UK leading multi-service company called WGC Ltd failed to pay more than £62,112.33 to 1,064 workers.

Niall Mackenzie, Acas Chief Executive, said: “Not only is it important for employers to pay the correct minimum wage rates, it is also the law. Failing to do so can result in grievances and potentially legal action, including costly employment tribunals, as well as being named and shamed.”

Hugo Boss UK, 9th on the London list, was fined for failing to pay £16,699.69 to 136 workers.

The named and shamed 65 businesses as published in Round 22 of the government’s National Minimum Wage Naming Scheme, obtained by MyLondon Magazine are as follows:

Adecco UK Ltd., in Lambeth, failed to pay £436,877.95 to 3,356 workers.

WGC Ltd, in Hackney, failed to pay £62,112.33 to 1,064 workers.

The City Pub Group PLC, in City of Westminster, failed to pay £45,182.95 to 88 workers.

Bow & Arrow Limited, City of Westminster, failed to pay £38,408.72 to 75 workers.

Places for People Leisure Limited, Camden, failed to pay £32,709.11 to 1,653 workers.

Car Giant Limited, Hammersmith and Fulham, failed to pay £29,375.17 to 351 workers.

Self-Portrait Ltd, Islington, failed to pay £27,722.63 to 11 workers.

EEV Management Limited, Harrow, failed to pay £27,253.82 to 6 workers.

Hugo Boss UK Limited, Camden, failed to pay £16,699.69 to 136 workers.

Adam Handling Limited, Tower Hamlets, failed to pay £14,830.24 to 9 workers.

Hats Group Ltd, Merton, failed to pay £14,183.29 to 4 workers.

Rooftop Rooms Limited, Enfield, failed to pay £14,168.46 to 22 workers.

Massive Analytic Limited, Islington, failed to pay £12,844.07 to 6 workers.

Nero Holdings Limited, City of Westminster, failed to pay £11,922.16 to 4 workers.
