Actor Yomi Fabiyi has reacted publicly to the release of Nollywood actor Baba Ijesha, declaring that the embattled comedian is now “free and out” following his acquittal by the Court of Appeal.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Fabiyi said he was satisfied that the appellate court cleared Baba Ijesha of allegations relating to defilement, describing the earlier case as influenced by “sentiments” and “misconceptions.”
Fabiyi, who has been one of Baba Ijesha’s most outspoken supporters since the case began, alleged that several issues surrounding the 2021 incident were mishandled. The actor claimed that some individuals involved in the matter acted with personal motives, insisting that certain aspects of the case “should be revisited.”
He further alleged that those who set up the environment in which the incident occurred did not follow proper procedures and raised questions about what he described as “selective justice.”
Fabiyi also repeated his long-held position that his advocacy was not in defence of sexual abuse, stressing that his human rights group condemns all forms of child abuse and exploitation. He, however, maintained that his concerns were centred on what he believes were procedural lapses and inconsistencies during the investigation and trial.
“Prerequisites for the actions taken were flawed. We will continue to stand against selective justice and abuse of fundamental rights,” he said.
Fabiyi’s comments come days after the Court of Appeal set aside the earlier conviction of Baba Ijesha, ruling that the prosecution failed to prove certain elements of the charges beyond reasonable doubt.
The case sparked nationwide debate on child protection, celebrity influence, and the handling of sexual-assault allegations.
