PDP Crisis: Gov. Makinde details rift with Wike

Quick Read

Makinde accused Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, of trying to create a “one-party state,” which he said goes against the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers.

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has explained why he is in conflict with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Makinde accused Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, of trying to create a “one-party state,” which he said goes against the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers.

Speaking about the tension in the PDP and the clash that happened on Tuesday at the party’s national secretariat, Makinde told party members to remain hopeful. He said the ongoing crisis is not only about the PDP but also about the future of democracy in Nigeria.

He added that tough situations often come before things improve, saying:

“If we have to stay here for two weeks so that democracy will survive in Nigeria, we will stay.”

When asked why he disagreed with Wike, especially since they were once close allies and part of the G5 before the 2023 elections, Makinde responded:

“Small minds talk about people. Average minds talk about events. We want to talk about issues. The real issue is that we don’t believe in a one-party Nigeria. Our founding fathers created a multi-party system so Nigerians can have choices when selecting their leaders.

“We must protect this system. I don’t want to talk about individuals or events.”

However, fresh report has emerged that the Police on Wednesday sealed up Wadata plaza the PDP secretariat in Abuja after the fracas that ensued yesterday between the two factionsin the party.
