Reactions to the life sentence handed to Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB leader, continued as his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor condemned the ruling, describing it as a setback for Nigeria’s judiciary.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Kanu’s lawyer said: “I feel very bad, I feel sad, it’s a very bad day for the judiciary, it is very bad for the criminal justice system in Nigeria. This is the first time in my entire life as a lawyer that I have seen a man being convicted for mere words he uttered.”
He added that the defence team is preparing to challenge the verdict at the Court of Appeal, insisting that Kanu’s conviction was unfair and that due process was not followed.
The lawyer’s remarks came shortly after Justice James Omotosho sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on seven terrorism-related counts, citing his Radio Biafra broadcasts, sit-at-home directives, and incitement against security personnel as evidence.
The ruling has sparked divided reactions across social media and among legal observers, with some praising the court for upholding national security and others criticising it as excessive.
