Nigerians on social media have reacted sharply to the life sentence given to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court.
The judgment, delivered on Thursday in Abuja, found Kanu guilty on all seven terrorism-related charges. The court held that his Radio Biafra broadcasts, sit-at-home directives and incitement against security agencies amounted to acts of terrorism.
But the ruling immediately split public opinion online.
On X, a user, @FCAleke1, fiercely condemned the judgment, saying the judge “has decided to go down in history as the one who sentenced an innocent man to life imprisonment,” adding that Omotosho’s “name shall go down in infamy.”
Another commenter wrote that with the sentence, “today, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu gets immortalised,” suggesting that the ruling would strengthen his supporters.
Others backed the judgment. An X user, @ComrUNFarouq, said the decision showed that “no one is above the law,” insisting that “actions that endanger innocent lives will always carry consequences. Justice has taken its course.”
Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad also hailed the ruling, describing it as a “bold judgment” that sends a “strong and clear message” to terrorists that they will “eventually be caught and meet the judgment they deserve.”
The reactions continued to pour in late Thursday as security around the Federal High Court and parts of Abuja tightened following the verdict.
