Aloy Ejimakor, one of the lawyers to convicted leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu said the secessionist leader has been moved from Abuja to a prison in Sokoto.
Ejimakor made the claim on his social media handles on Friday. He said the action will move Kanu far away from his lawyers and loved ones.
“MAZI NNAMDI KANU has just been moved from DSS Abuja to the correctional facility (prison) in Sokoto; so far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones and well wishers,” he said while querying the reason for the movement.
“While urging #Ndigbo to remain calm, I must question the wisdom of sending #MNK to Sokoto prison. When Awolowo was convicted in 1963, he was sent to the East, a neutral zone in his feud with the North. Pres. Tinubu can still halt this drift, as I said in this video,” Ejimakor said while sharing the video of an interview he had with a television station after Kanu was jailed by Justice James Omotosho on Thursday.
Justice Omotosho convicted Kanu in all the seven counts preferred against him after declaring that the Federal Government had been able to prove the terrorism case it filed against the IPOB leader beyond doubt.
Justice Omotosho consequently sentenced the IPOB leader to life imprisonment in counts one, four, five and six, instead of death sentence penalty.
The judge, who sentenced Kanu to a 20-year jail term in count three, however, committed him to three years imprisonment in count seven.
However, the Judge has also instructed that because of likely danger to his life given the number of killings associated with his directives, Kuje Correctional Centre would not be suitable for Nnamdi Kanu
He directed that Nigeria Correctional Service to put Kanu in protective custody at a secure facility elsewhere in Nigeria.
The court also also ordered that Kanu must not have access to any digital device while in prison.
The movement of Kanu to Sokoto prison, if confirmed, will be in compliance with the court’s directive.
