It’ll be like playing sports or a video game or something like that,” Musk said. “If you want to work, it’s like growing vegetables in your backyard. Some people do it because they enjoy it.”
Elon Musk has predicted a future where work will become completely optional, thanks to advances in artificial intelligence and robotics.
Speaking at the US-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO said that within the next 10 to 20 years, choosing to work will be more like a hobby, similar to playing sports or gardening.
“In ten to 20 years my prediction is that work will be optional. It’ll be like playing sports or a video game or something like that,” Musk said. “If you want to work, it’s like growing vegetables in your backyard. Some people do it because they enjoy it.”
Musk, currently worth an estimated $360 billion, suggested that technological progress could make money less relevant in the future. “There is only one way to make everyone wealthy – and that’s AI and robotics,” he added. “There will still be constraints on power. But at some point, currency becomes irrelevant.”
The Tesla chief has been developing humanoid robots, known as Optimus or “Tesla Bots,” which he envisions could one day be owned by everyone to help reduce poverty and make work optional.
While economists have questioned whether robots can achieve such results quickly, Musk remains confident that AI and automation will transform daily life.
“Work will be something people choose to do, not something they have to do to survive,” he said, highlighting a future where humans could focus more on creativity, hobbies, and personal interests rather than traditional jobs.
