The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Nzube Odo, on suspicion of raping a female student of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) Secondary School in Abakaliki.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, stating that the suspect was apprehended on Friday, November 21, following a report of the incident which allegedly occurred during school hours.
“The suspect is presently in our custody undergoing interrogation as investigations continue,” Ukandu said.
He reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual violence and urged members of the public to desist from all forms of rape while collectively protecting the girl-child.
Under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Adaku Uche-Anya, the command pledged continued efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.
Residents of the area expressed alarm over the incident, alleging that the suspect had previously sexually assaulted other female students from the same school.
One resident, Mike Okorie, claimed the man had been loitering around the school premises for an extended period and was often described by locals as mentally unstable.
“Some people say he is a mad man. He has been walking around EBSU Secondary School, and now he has been caught raping a student during school hours,” Okorie said, adding that previous complaints had been lodged with both the police and school authorities.
Other community members highlighted the persistent presence of mentally disturbed individuals around the only state-owned university secondary school, with some roaming naked.
They called on the Ebonyi State Government to urgently intervene by evacuating such persons and strengthening security measures within and around the school premises to prevent further incidents.
The police have assured the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated and the suspect prosecuted if found culpable.
