Major General Olatoye, in his remarks, congratulated the COAS on his appointment by President Bola Tinubu. He described the NDA as the “training factory” for future military leaders and promised to build on

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for a major update to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) curriculum to meet today’s security challenges.

He said training should now include stronger night operations, better physical fitness, the use of artificial intelligence, and other modern warfare skills. According to him, these changes will help young officers understand the realities of modern battlefields and develop the courage, discipline, and leadership needed for effective military service.

Lt.-Gen. Shaibu explained that his leadership vision is to transform the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, and combat-ready force that can effectively carry out its constitutional duties alongside other security agencies.

He made these remarks during a meeting with the NDA Commandant, Major General Oluyemi Olatoye, who visited him at Army Headquarters in Abuja.

In a statement by Army spokesperson Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, the COAS encouraged the Commandant to strengthen cadet training by focusing on discipline, character, courage, and strategic thinking.

He said this is important for closing gaps in military operations and preparing officers for complex security threats.

Shaibu also stressed the importance of improving the NDA’s research centres, especially the Department of Military Science.

He said better research will support Nigeria’s Defence Industry, promote local military innovation, and help the country become more self-reliant.

He assured the Commandant of his full support in achieving these goals and emphasized the need to produce officers who are intelligent, skilled, and ready to protect the country.

Major General Olatoye, in his remarks, congratulated the COAS on his appointment by President Bola Tinubu.

He described the NDA as the “training factory” for future military leaders and promised to build on the progress made by previous Commandants.

He also appealed for continued support from the Army leadership to help the NDA fulfill its mission of producing competent and professional officers.
