Nigeria has strongly condemned the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, warning that the seizure of power threatens democratic stability across West Africa.

In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said the Federal Government was “deeply troubled” by the development, describing the takeover as an unacceptable violation of constitutional rule.

Nigeria reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and demanded the immediate reinstatement of democratic governance, including the protection of detained officials and the safeguarding of state institutions.

The statement cited the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which rejects any attempt to assume power by unconstitutional means. It also urged the junta to guarantee the safety of election observers still in the country.

The Federal Government called on all actors to remain calm, pursue dialogue, and respect the results of the recently concluded elections as announced by the electoral commission.

As a member of ECOWAS and the African Union, Nigeria said it would work with regional and global partners to support efforts aimed at restoring constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau.

It reiterated its long-standing commitment to promoting peace, democratic governance, and stability across the continent.
