Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has denied rumours that he may accept a vice-presidential position ahead of the 2027 elections.
The rumours started after media executive Dele Momodu, an ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, suggested that Amaechi could become Atiku’s running mate if Peter Obi refuses to join a joint presidential ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Momodu, in an interview with Punch said many people underestimate Amaechi.
He noted that Amaechi played a major role in helping Muhammadu Buhari win the presidency in the past. Momodu added that if Peter Obi decides not to run with Atiku, then Amaechi might be considered.
But Amaechi has made it clear that he is not interested in being anybody’s vice president. His media aide, David Iyofor, stated that Amaechi’s only focus is to contest for President of Nigeria.
According to Iyofor, there have been no discussions anywhere about Amaechi becoming a deputy to anyone.
He stressed that Amaechi will not join any conversation or plan that suggests he should be a running mate.
He also advised politicians to stop mentioning Amaechi’s name in discussions about vice-presidential slots.
Amaechi has in the past said he is fully qualified to run for president, pointing to his political experience and service. He made this known in May 2022 while meeting with APC delegates.
