The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its 2026 governorship primary because of unresolved problems in the party’s national leadership.

The primary was supposed to take place on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

In a statement released in Osogbo, the state chairman, Sunday Bisi, said Governor Ademola Adeleke had followed all the necessary steps in the PDP timetable.

Bisi explained that Governor Adeleke bought and submitted his expression of interest and nomination forms between October 13 and 25, 2025. He then appeared before the Screening Committee on October 30, 2025, where he was cleared and given his Certificate of Clearance.

However, Bisi said the party ran into serious leadership problems at the national level shortly after the screening. Some top party officers in charge of organising congresses and primaries were suspended.

Because of this crisis, the ward and local government congresses scheduled for November 24 and 29, where delegates for the primaries were to be elected, could not hold. As a result, the governorship primary can no longer take place as planned.

The chairman also confirmed that Governor Adeleke is the only person who bought forms, submitted them, and passed screening according to the official schedule.

Still, the ongoing leadership crisis in the national PDP has created fears that the Governor may pull out of the race unless the issue is resolved in a way recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before time runs out.

Bisi added that only the PDP National Secretariat has the authority to conduct primaries but said it was important to update party members and the public.

He assured that the party is working to fix the crisis legally and quickly. He also restated the PDP’s commitment to following electoral rules and maintaining transparency.
