Samsung has launched its first triple-folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, a high-end device aimed at tech enthusiasts rather than regular consumers.
Unveiled on Tuesday at a Samsung store in Seoul, the phone will be available from December 12 with a price tag of $2,443, more than twice the cost of the new iPhone 17.
The device unfolds into a 10-inch display, giving users a larger screen for work, creativity and multitasking, the company said. Despite its size, it remains thin and weighs 309 grams, with the slimmest point measuring under 0.2 inches. It comes only in black.
Although Samsung is calling this its first triple-fold phone, China’s Huawei actually released a similar device last year at a similar price.
Because of slowing growth in the global smartphone market, companies are trying new designs to stand out. Samsung said the Galaxy Z TriFold is a “special edition” and is not meant for mass sales.
The phone also comes with built-in generative AI features, which can assist users in real time through screen sharing or the camera.
Samsung unveiled the device as industry reports show Apple may overtake Samsung as the world’s top smartphone maker for the first time in 14 years.
Research firm Counterpoint forecasts Apple to reach a 19.4% global market share in 2025, slightly ahead of Samsung’s 18.7%.
Apple has also been widely rumoured to be working on a foldable iPhone, possibly arriving in 2026.
