How Satguru Maharaji plans to help free Nnamdi Kanu
Quick Read
Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment for multiple terrorism-related offences and received additional jail terms for other counts of his conviction.
Satguru Maharaj, founder of One Love Family, said he is willing to help secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), if certain conditions are met. These include stopping Biafra Radio broadcasts and ending the sit-at-home orders in the South-East.
In an interview on his temple’s radio station on Wednesday, Maharaj said Kanu was guilty of terrorism-related charges, which could carry the death penalty under Nigerian law. He added that Kanu’s release would require political negotiations.
Maharaj explained, “For anyone seeking Kanu’s pardon, they must take concrete steps. Stop Biafra radio, end the sit-at-home orders, and accept the court judgment. Igbo elders can then work behind the scenes to discuss the matter with the President. Once these steps are taken, I can help facilitate his release.”
He also emphasized that the Eastern region has gained a stronger political voice under President Tinubu, and urged people to stop spreading claims that the East is being Islamized.
Earlier, Abia State Governor Alex Otti visited Kanu at the Sokoto correctional facility and later met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja. These efforts are part of ongoing attempts to secure Kanu’s release.
