After a quiet first half, Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitiké scored twice in two minutes, putting Liverpool 2-0 ahead early in the second half.
Leeds got back into the game when Ibrahima Konaté fouled Wilfried Gnonto inside the penalty area. Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored from the spot.
Just two minutes later, Anton Stach scored from inside the box to make it 2-2.
Liverpool then retook the lead through Dominik Szoboszlai, who finished well to make it 3-2.
But deep into added time, Leeds won a corner. The ball reached Tanaka at the back post and he volleyed in, sending the home crowd wild.
The result moves Leeds up to 16th place, three points above the relegation zone. Liverpool remain struggling for form with only four wins in their last 15 matches.
Liverpool’s Issues Continue
Manager Arne Slot benched Mohamed Salah for the third straight match. Despite good spells of possession, Liverpool could not finish their chances early on.
Ekitiké was one of their best players, scoring his first Premier League goals since September. However, Liverpool gave away possession cheaply and defended poorly, especially at set pieces.
Only Nottingham Forest have conceded more goals from set plays this season than Liverpool.
Leeds Show Great Fight
Leeds started slowly and looked tired, but their energy returned once they scored. The home supporters lifted the players, and Leeds pushed until the end.
They took advantage of Liverpool’s mistakes and showed strong character, especially after falling behind again late in the game.
This result, along with their recent win over Chelsea, eases pressure on manager Daniel Farke.
What’s Next?
Liverpool play Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, then face Brighton at home next Saturday.
Leeds travel to Brentford next Sunday.
