Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso says Kylian Mbappe is on the verge of matching one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s major scoring records at the club.

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso says Kylian Mbappe is on the verge of matching one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s major scoring records at the club.

Mbappe has scored 55 goals for Real Madrid in 2025, putting him just four goals away from Ronaldo’s 59-goal tally recorded in 2013, the highest by any Real Madrid player in a calendar year.

Alonso praised the French forward’s impact and ambition, noting that his influence on the team mirrors that of Ronaldo.

“Kylian is on his way to making history at Real Madrid like Cristiano did. Not just because of the importance he has in the team, but also because of the ambition he conveys and the number of goals he scores,” Alonso said during a news conference.

“Kylian is one of the chosen ones. He has this desire within him not just to do things well, but also to have a positive influence on others. This is something he shares with Cristiano, this contagious ambition that inspires the rest of the team.”

Mbappe, who grew up idolising Ronaldo, will have another chance to close the gap when Celta Vigo visit the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

The 26-year-old is currently in strong form:

31 league goals last season, which won him the European Golden Shoe

16 goals in 15 La Liga games this season

9 goals in 5 Champions League matches

Real Madrid face Manchester City in the Champions League on December 10, before league games against Alaves and Sevilla, giving Mbappe four matches to equal or surpass the record before the year ends.

Ronaldo, now Portugal captain, scored 450 goals in 438 matches for Real Madrid. Mbappe has 69 goals in 79 games for the club since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024.
