The organisation described the incident as a serious threat to democracy and an unacceptable attempt to overturn the will of the people.

The ECOWAS Commission has strongly condemned the reported attempt by some members of the military to take power in Benin.

The organisation described the incident as a serious threat to democracy and an unacceptable attempt to overturn the will of the people.

In a statement released in Abuja on Sunday, ECOWAS said it is unacceptable for anyone to forcefully remove a government that was legally elected.

The Commission stressed that every citizen and institution in Benin must respect the country’s Constitution, which guides how leaders are chosen and how power should change hands.

ECOWAS praised the Benin government and the Republican Army for responding quickly and preventing the situation from escalating.

According to the organisation, their actions helped protect peace and public safety.

The Commission also issued a warning to those who planned the takeover.

It stated clearly that the individuals involved whether acting alone or as a group will be held accountable for any violence, injuries, or destruction of property caused by their actions.

Furthermore, ECOWAS announced that it is fully prepared to support Benin during this crisis.

This support may include political assistance, diplomatic support, and even the deployment of the regional standby military force if necessary.

ECOWAS said this measure would be taken to help protect Benin’s democracy, defend its Constitution, and preserve its national unity and territorial integrity.

The statement ended by assuring the people of Benin that the regional body stands with them and will continue working to ensure peace, stability, and respect for democratic systems across West Africa.
