Nollywood actress, filmmaker and CEO of ROK Studios, Mary Remmy Njoku, has stirred major conversations after declaring that many creatives only become famous today by doing “something stupid or crazy,” rather than through genuine hard work.

Speaking during a panel session at NECLive 2025, Njoku reflected on her journey from actress to media entrepreneur, revealing that her wealth and success came from solving problems in the creative industry, not chasing clout.

According to her, the industry’s attention has shifted in recent years, often rewarding dramatic or controversial behaviour over authentic creativity.

“I got rich by solving problems. If you want to blow right now, you can’t blow by doing good. You have to do something stupid or crazy. And it’s not fair on the very few people that are doing good,” she said.

Njoku, who founded the ROK TV channels and built one of Africa’s most influential film studios, urged young creatives not to be discouraged by the new wave of sensationalism that dominates social media.

She acknowledged that attention is often given to those who shock the public, but encouraged rising talents to use whatever influence they gain positively.
