Men are the real gold diggers – Toke Makinwa

Nigerian media personality and fashion influencer, Toke Makinwa, has stirred a controversy on gender roles, marriage expectations, and financial dynamics after declaring that men, not women, are the biggest gold diggers.

Makinwa made the controversial remarks during a new episode of her podcast, where she challenged the long-standing stereotype that women marry wealthy men for financial gain.

According to her, society unfairly criticises women for making financially informed marital choices while ignoring men who do the same.

“People are constantly always insulting women for knowing what they want,” she said.

She noted that many men boldly pursue relationships with women from wealthy families but receive little to no criticism for doing so.

“You sit with all these podcasts as men… and say women are dating men for money. The other gender are the biggest gold diggers in the world,” Makinwa argued.

“They marry generational wealth, and they do it without shame.”

The media star clarified that her comments were not meant as an attack on men who marry strategically, stating that financial considerations have always played a role in marriage for both genders.

“And I don’t hate on them,” she added. “Marriage has always included elements of financial security.”
