Fast-rising Nigerian singer Fola has opened up about his humble beginnings, revealing that he once worked at his father’s betting shop before finding his footing in the music industry.

The singer shared his story during a recent interview, where he recounted how his passion for music started during his high school days.

According to him, although he was not making music professionally at the time, he was part of a band and nurtured his love for music from there.

“I started making music in high school, obviously not professionally, but I had a band I was playing with,” Fola said.

After graduating, Fola said the struggle intensified as he lacked basic resources to pursue his dreams. He revealed that he did not even own a mobile phone and had to rely on a friend’s phone to make progress.

“It was difficult for me because I didn’t even have a phone. I was using my guy’s phone to do stuff,” he recalled.

With limited opportunities in Ibadan, Fola decided to work at a small betting shop owned by his father in order to raise money for himself.

“I checked my environment and it wasn’t encouraging, so I started working at a bet shop owned by my dad. I worked as a manager and cashier so that I could raise some money for myself,” he said.

The singer noted that relocating to Lagos marked a major turning point in his journey. In the city, he met the late Mohbad, whom he credited with playing a significant role in shaping his career.

“I met Mohbad. Mohbad did a lot of things for me,” Fola said.

Through Mohbad, Fola was also introduced to Bella Shmurda, a connection that led to an informal collaboration in 2022. He explained that despite the wide gap in their profiles at the time, Bella Shmurda agreed to work with him without any financial expectations.

“The gap was so much between us, but Bella did it anyway even when he wasn’t going to make a dime out of it,” he added.

Reflecting on his journey so far, Fola expressed gratitude for how far he has come.

“I thank God for where we are today,” the singer said.
