Legendary Hollywood director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, have died, the family has confirmed.

In a short statement, a family spokesperson said they were “heartbroken by the sudden loss” of the couple.

The Los Angeles Police Department said homicide detectives are at Reiner’s home, where they are investigating what they described as an apparent homicide. A law enforcement source told CNN that investigators interviewed a family member on Sunday evening as part of the inquiry.

Reiner, 78, was one of the most respected figures in American film and television. He directed several classic movies, including When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride and A Few Good Men. He first became famous for his role as Archie Bunker’s son-in-law on the hit TV show All in the Family.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) paid tribute to Reiner, calling him “one of the most significant figures in the history of film and television.” In a statement, union president Sean Astin said Reiner’s work had a lasting impact on American culture and noted his nearly 60 years as a union member.

Astin added that Reiner’s films made people think, feel emotional and laugh, and said that was how he would always remember him.

Reiner’s wife, Michele Singer Reiner, who was 67, also built a strong career in Hollywood. She worked as a producer, actor and photographer and collaborated with her husband on several projects.

She produced films such as Shock and Awe and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which was released this year. She also acted in the Nora Ephron film Mixed Nuts and worked as a photographer on projects including Misery.

Singer Reiner earned an Emmy nomination for producing the documentary Albert Brooks: Defending My Life and also produced God & Country, a documentary on Christian nationalism in the United States.

Police say investigations into the deaths are ongoing.
