Aisha Buhari reveals the shocking rumour that made Buhari fear for his life

Former First Lady Aisha has revealed that her late husband, President Muhammadu Buhari, once believed rumours within Aso Rock that she planned to poison him.

She said the false claims briefly affected Buhari’s behaviour, forcing him to lock his room, change his daily routine, and stop eating properly.

The revelation is contained in a newly launched 600-page biography, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, written by Dr Charles Omole. The book was unveiled at the State House on Monday.

According to the book, Aisha Buhari explained that the president’s major health crisis in 2017, which led to a 154-day medical leave in the United Kingdom, was not caused by poisoning or any mysterious illness.

She said the problem was caused by disrupted meals and poor nutrition, following the spread of rumours that turned her husband against her, even if briefly.

“For years, I personally managed his diet and supplements,” she was quoted as saying. “Then came the gossip. They said I wanted to kill him.”

Mrs Buhari revealed that her husband believed the rumour for about one week, during which he stopped eating well and discontinued his supplements.

“Meals were missed, supplements were stopped, and his health suffered,” she said.

She further disclosed that for almost one year, Buhari did not eat lunch regularly due to poor meal management.

According to her, Buhari’s recovery was quick once proper nutrition and supplements were restored during his medical stay in London. She noted that he stopped using his walking stick just three days after treatment resumed.

The biography also sheds light on deep mistrust within the Presidential Villa, including claims of surveillance and conspiracy theories, such as the widely dismissed ‘Jibril of Sudan’ body-double story.

The 22-chapter book traces Buhari’s journey from his childhood in Daura, Katsina State, to his death in a London hospital in July 2025, at the age of 82.
