The Nigerian Senate has asked the National Security Adviser (NSA) to investigate false reports claiming that Senate President Godswill Akpabio had a health emergency and was rushed to a hospital in London.
The decision came during Tuesday’s plenary session after Senator Titus Zam raised a point of order condemning the spread of such misinformation. He described the reports as “unacceptable” and urged authorities to find and punish those responsible to prevent future incidents.
Senate President Akpabio also spoke during the session, expressing concern over the challenge of controlling media content about politicians.
He called much of the information circulating online “garbage in, garbage out,” highlighting how difficult it is to stop false news.
The resolution follows recent online rumours about Akpabio collapsing and being hospitalized, which his aides have repeatedly dismissed as false.
