Rob Reiner’s son charged with murder over parents’ deaths

Prosecutors in Los Angeles have charged Nick Reiner, son of veteran Hollywood director Rob Reiner, with the murder of his parents.

The 32-year-old was slammed with two counts of first-degree murder, with prosecutors also alleging multiple killings, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman said on Tuesday.

If convicted, Nick Reiner could face life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty. The prosecutor, however, said a final decision on seeking the death penalty has not been made.

The charges followed the discovery of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, dead inside their Brentwood, California home. Police said the couple were killed in a knife attack.

Prosecutors also accused Nick Reiner of using a deadly weapon, said to be a knife. He is expected to be brought to court to enter a plea once prison officials confirm he is medically fit.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell described the case as tragic.

“This is a heartbreaking case for the family and for the city,” he said.

Authorities said autopsies are still ongoing to determine the exact cause and time of death, while more details are expected to emerge in court.
