Police begin disciplinary trials for erring officers in Imo
The Imo State Police Command has begun disciplinary proceedings against seven police officers accused of misconduct, including extortion and unprofessional behaviour.
The action follows a viral video that showed operatives of a joint security task force allegedly harassing and extorting travellers at Seven-and-a-Half Junction, Obowo Local Government Area, last Saturday.
Police spokesperson in the state, Henry Okoye, said the officers have been subjected to an orderly room trial in line with Nigeria Police Force regulations.
Those facing trial are Inspector Eyo Udo, Inspector Peter Nweke, Inspector Ita Asuquo, Sergeant Chukwuka Ekwueme, Police Constable Onuwa Samuel, Police Constable Patchris David, and Police Constable Amos Sunny.
Okoye explained that the officers were identified by complainants, arrested and investigated before the trial process began.
He added that personnel from other security agencies involved in the incident have been handed over to their respective authorities for disciplinary action.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Aboki Danjuma, assured the public that the process would be fair and transparent, adding that the outcome of the trial would be made public.
