Brown University shooting suspect found dead
Police have confirmed that the suspect linked to last week’s deadly shooting at Brown University has been found dead after a days-long manhunt.
Authorities identified the suspect as Claudio Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national and former student of Brown University. His body was discovered inside a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, six days after the attack in Providence, Rhode Island.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said investigators tracked the suspect through CCTV footage and tips from the public, which led them to a car rental outlet where his identity was confirmed.
Police also believe Valente was responsible for the killing of an MIT professor, Nuno F. Gomes Loureiro, 47, who was shot at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, two days after the Brown University shooting. Both men reportedly attended the same university in Portugal in the late 1990s.
Brown University President Christina Paxson said Valente studied physics at the Ivy League school between 2000 and 2001 and had no current connection to the university.
Two students were killed and nine others injured when a gunman opened fire inside the Barus & Holley engineering building during examinations. The victims were identified as Ella Cook, 19, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18.
Investigators said firearms and other evidence linked to the Brown University crime scene were recovered near where the suspect was found. Authorities have not yet established a motive for the attacks.
Following the incident, the United States government announced the suspension of its green card lottery programme. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the move was directed by President Donald Trump, citing security concerns.
Police and federal authorities say investigations into both cases are ongoing, despite the suspect being found dead.
