Peter John, 59, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years after brutally murdering his own brother in a violent outburst that ended with a chilling self-confession to police.

At the Inner London Crown Court, John admitted killing his brother, Miller John, aged 60, in the home they shared on Homerton Road, Hackney.

He pleaded guilty on September 17 and was formally sentenced on December 18.

The shocking chain of events came to light in the early hours of Monday, March 3, when Peter John walked to Stoke Newington Police Station and made a 999 call while standing outside the building.

“I think I’ve committed murder,” he told the operator, before bluntly admitting: “I bludgeoned my brother last night in a fit of rage.”

Officers immediately approached him as he remained on the line.

John told police the attack happened the previous night and that he woke up the following morning to find his brother dead on the floor. He then left the house and walked to the police station to report himself.

Officers and paramedics later attended the Homerton Road address, where Miller John was found dead inside the property.

Post-mortem findings revealed he had been subjected to a sustained and savage assault, attacked with multiple weapons including a garden fork and a walking stick, leaving him with severe puncture wounds to the head and leg.

Peter was arrested the same day and charged on March 4. Investigators painstakingly reconstructed the events surrounding the killing, reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to track John’s movements before and after the attack, strengthening the prosecution’s case.

Detective Inspector John Marriott, who led the investigation, described the killing as senseless and devastating.

“Peter carried out a brutal attack against his brother in the home they shared,” he said. “I hope today’s sentence brings some measure of comfort to the John family after an unimaginably painful ordeal.”

The court heard that officers worked closely with the family throughout the investigation, offering support as they came to terms with a killing that transformed a family home into the scene of a fatal crime.
