Aston Villa punish Man Utd’s defensive blunder to score two
Aston Villa maintained their blistering form with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Villa Park on Sunday, moving within three points of Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Morgan Rogers was the star of the show, scoring twice to secure the win. He opened the scoring in the 45th minute, converting a perfect pass from John McGinn, before doubling Villa’s lead in the 57th minute with a sublime curling finish assisted by Ollie Watkins.
Manchester United had briefly equalized in stoppage time of the first half when Matheus Cunha capitalized on a defensive error from Ezri Konsa to make it 1-1, assisted by Pape Dorgu. However, Rogers’ second goal proved decisive as Villa held on to extend their winning run.
The result marked Aston Villa’s tenth consecutive win in all competitions and their seventh successive league victory, a feat not achieved in 36 years. Villa’s turnaround has been remarkable, especially considering their poor start to the season. Under Unai Emery, the side now sits third in the league table.
Manchester United faced another blow as Bruno Fernandes left the pitch injured at half-time, leaving Erik ten Hag’s side scrambling to respond.
Former Leeds and England forward Sue Smith praised Rogers on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Morgan Rogers is absolutely brilliant. He’s calm in key moments, first touch perfect, knows exactly what he’s going to do, and produces those moments that win games.”
The win also marked Villa’s best run in 111 years, highlighting a stunning turnaround under Emery’s management. The Villans will look to continue their momentum after the winter break as they chase down the league leaders.
