Late Nigerian musician and political activist, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has been announced to be the first African recipent of a Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award at the 67th Grammys.
The announcement, made by the CEO of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr, revealed that Fela is being recognised as the architect of Afrobeats.
He will be awarded alongside other music legends like Whitney Houston, Paul Simon, Cher and Chaka Khan.
Mason described them as an extraordinary group, adding that they influenced the foundation of modern music.
“An extraordinary group whose influence spans generations, genres, and the very foundation of modern music,” he stated.
