LASTMA warns against obstruction, vows firm festive enforcement

“LASTMA advises motorists to ensure vehicles are mechanically sound and strongly warns against alcohol consumption, speeding and reckless driving,” he said.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has activated an intelligence-led traffic control framework to ensure smooth movement and public safety across Lagos during Detty December.
The General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, on Sunday said the move anticipates heightened socio-economic activities associated with the annual festive season.
Bakare-Oki noted that yuletide celebrations usually trigger heavy traffic due to concerts, carnivals, religious gatherings, end-of-year parties and other recreational events.
“Consequently, LASTMA has elevated its operational readiness through deployment of seasoned officers, strengthened surveillance and round-the-clock monitoring of critical corridors,” he said.
He said attention would focus on event-prone areas, commercial districts and major arterial routes across the state.
Bakare-Oki urged event centres, clubs and lounges to implement effective internal traffic and parking plans to accommodate patrons strictly within their premises.
He warned that vehicle spillovers causing obstruction or gridlock would attract “firm and decisive enforcement actions.
“Such practices flagrantly infringe upon the collective right of Lagosians to safe, orderly and unhindered mobility.”
The LASTMA boss also cautioned market leaders and traders to stop displaying wares on carriageways, walkways and pedestrian corridors.
He said such encroachment forces pedestrians into traffic, heightening crash risks and worsening congestion.
“LASTMA advises motorists to ensure vehicles are mechanically sound and strongly warns against alcohol consumption, speeding and reckless driving,” he said.
Bakare-Oki said enforcement teams would remain proactive on illegal parking, obstruction, speeding and impaired driving throughout the festive period.
He urged road users to cooperate with officers, obey traffic laws and show patience, noting collective compliance was vital for a safe festive season.
“Emergencies can be reported via LASTMA’s toll-free hotline: 0800 005 27862,” he said.
He added that tow trucks and the 24-hour night gang had been deployed statewide, particularly along the Lekki–Ajah corridor.
