The Super Eagles of Nigeria will kick off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars today at the Complexe Sportif de Fès by 6:30 pm, with history, form, and tactical battles all set to shape the Group C clash.
Ndidi: Calm, Focused and Ready
Speaking ahead of the game, newly appointed captain Wilfred Ndidi insisted there is no pressure in the Nigerian camp. The Besiktas midfielder described the atmosphere as calm, focused, and positive, emphasizing that the team is mentally prepared and united.
“The spirit in the camp is very high, we’re very energised. This game is very important for us, it sets the momentum. Everyone is ready, from the players to the staff,” Ndidi said.
The Super Eagles enter the tournament with a strong record at AFCON group stages: 10 wins, three draws, and just one loss in their last 14 matches. They have also avoided defeat in the opening games of the last three tournaments.
Despite being favourites, Ndidi warned against complacency. “Every country that has qualified for the AFCON cannot be underrated. They’re capable of competing for the trophy. We as Nigerians are here to contend, not just to compete,” he said.
The captain also reflected on Nigeria’s runners-up finish at the last AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, noting that lessons from that campaign have strengthened the team’s resolve.
Tanzania Target Osimhen
Tanzania coach Manuel Gomandi has revealed that his team has a clear plan to contain Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen.
“We have a tactical plan to try to neutralise Victor Osimhen, but it’s not only him,” Gomandi said. “Nigeria have players like Chukwueze and Lookman. If one is neutralised, the other is attacking.”
Gomandi warned that any lapse in concentration could be costly, given Nigeria’s attacking depth. However, he remains confident in his squad’s readiness for the challenge. “It is a very difficult match, but it is a good challenge for us,” he said.
Historical Edge Favours Nigeria
Nigeria and Tanzania have met seven times in senior international football, with Nigeria winning four, drawing three, and Tanzania yet to register a victory.
1980 AFCON: Nigeria 3–1 Tanzania
1980 World Cup Qualifier: Nigeria 1–1 Tanzania
1980 World Cup Qualifier: Tanzania 0–2 Nigeria
2015 AFCON Qualifier: Tanzania 0–0 Nigeria
2016 AFCON Qualifier: Nigeria 1–0 Tanzania
History shows that Nigeria typically dominates possession and attacks, while Tanzania have tended to defend compactly and look for counter-attacking opportunities.
What to Watch For
Nigeria’s attack: Osimhen, Chukwueze, and Lookman will test Tanzania’s defence.
Tanzania’s discipline: How well the Taifa Stars can stay compact and exploit counter-attacks.
Momentum: Nigeria often start cautiously in opening matches, but early goals could set the tone for the game.
With Nigeria aiming for a fourth continental crown and Tanzania seeking their first AFCON win, today’s match promises a fascinating contest for fans and neutrals alike.
The second Group C match, Tunisia vs Uganda, kicks off later at 9:00 pm at Stade Olympique de Rabat.
