Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged residents to remain calm following a fire outbreak at the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) Building on Martins Street, Lagos Island.
The fire, whose cause has yet to be determined, broke out on Wednesday. No casualties were recorded, according to officials.
Sanwo-Olu, who reportedly monitored the incident from the time it was reported, immediately directed the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to intensify emergency operations and ensure the evacuation of nearby buildings to safeguard lives.
Firefighters received a distress call at about 4:41 p.m. and responded swiftly from the Ebute Elefun and Dolphin fire stations, with reinforcements from Sari Iganmu and the Alausa headquarters. Crews arrived at the scene within 12 minutes and commenced coordinated containment efforts.
Preliminary findings indicate that the fire started from the fifth floor of the building before spreading to other levels. The structure, formerly used as office space, currently serves largely as a warehouse and retail outlet for clothing materials.
The governor remained in constant contact with emergency responders and security agencies throughout the operation. As at about 3:40 a.m., when the fire had largely been brought under control, he continued to receive updates and issue directives.
“Our priority is the safety of lives,” Sanwo-Olu said. “I have directed that the building and its surroundings be thoroughly secured and that emergency personnel must ensure that no one is left inside. Lagosians should remain calm; the situation is under control.”
Security agencies have since cordoned off the area, while emergency teams continue safety assessments to prevent further incidents.
The Lagos State Government assured residents that it remains fully on top of the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
