Morocco Vs Mali: Night of records, ruptured streaks in Rabat

Quick Read

The result kept Morocco in a strong position in the group, but it also ended both Bounou’s long clean-sheet run and Morocco’s impressive winning streak.

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou had a night of mixed emotions during the Atlas Lions’ 1-1 draw with Mali in their second Group A match at the 1xBet Official Sponsor AFCON 2025.

The result kept Morocco in a strong position in the group, but it also ended both Bounou’s long clean-sheet run and Morocco’s impressive winning streak.

By starting the match against Mali, Bounou played his 13th AFCON game, making him the most capped Moroccan goalkeeper in the history of the competition.

He broke the previous record held by former Morocco goalkeeper Badou Zaki, who made 12 appearances.

The 33-year-old also moved into joint eighth place on Morocco’s all-time AFCON appearance list.

Clean-Sheet Run Comes to an End

Bounou conceded his first goal for Morocco after keeping clean sheets in nine straight matches. The goal came from a penalty after the ball slipped under his arm.

Before this match, the last time he conceded was in March, during Morocco’s 2-1 win over Niger in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Morocco’s Winning Streak Stops

The draw against Mali also ended Morocco’s run of 19 consecutive wins in all competitions. It was the first time Morocco failed to win a match since March 26, 2024, when they played a goalless friendly draw against Mauritania.

Morocco Still in Control

Despite the draw, Morocco remains in a strong position in Group A, with four points from two matches, keeping them on course for qualification to the next round.
