Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has confirmed that the Federal Government provided intelligence support for United States strikes on ISIS-linked terrorists in Nigeria, describing the operation as a vindication of the current administration’s counterterrorism strategy.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Friday morning, Tuggar said Nigeria has consistently maintained an open and pragmatic approach to security cooperation, working with all partners committed to combating terrorism, regardless of religion or ideology.

“Nigeria has a radical system in its approach, which is to work with all partners that are committed to the fight against terrorism, irrespective of religion, whether Muslim or Christian and irrespective of the type of terrorism,” Tuggar said, saying “This is an ongoing process.”

He disclosed that Nigerian intelligence played a role in the coordinated operation, which saw U.S. forces carry out precision strikes on ISIS targets, aimed at curbing the activities of foreign-linked extremists and preventing further loss of innocent lives.

According to the minister, the collaboration reflects long-standing efforts by Nigeria to deepen security ties with international partners, particularly the United States.

“We have been working closely with the Americans. This is what we have always hoped for, to work with the Americans and other countries to combat terrorism and stop the deaths of innocent Nigerians,” he stated, adding that “This is a vindication of the Tinubu administration.”

Tuggar dismissed claims that the Federal Government had been slow or hesitant in addressing insecurity, saying the operation clearly demonstrates its resolve.

“For those who thought there was foot-dragging or that the government was not doing enough, this shows that we are committed and prepared to work with all partners,” he said.

He further revealed that the strikes on ISIS followed direct high-level consultations between Nigeria and the United States. Tuggar said he spoke for 19 minutes with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ahead of the operation.

“I was on the phone with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. We spoke extensively, and it was agreed that I would speak with President Bola Tinubu for him to give the go-ahead,” Tuggar explained, saying that “I did speak with him, and it was agreed.”

He added that both governments also agreed on the messaging that would follow the strikes, stressing that the operation was purely about counterterrorism and civilian protection.

“It was clear that this was a strike against terrorism. It has nothing to do with religion; it is about protecting Nigerians and innocent lives, whether Nigerian or not,” Tuggar said.

The minister disclosed that he spoke again with Rubio for an additional five minutes shortly before the strikes were executed, underscoring the level of coordination between both countries.
