Mozambique recorded a historic 3-2 victory over Gabon on Sunday in their Group F clash at the 1XBET AFCON 2025 in Morocco, ending a long wait for their first-ever win at the tournament.
The Mambas, who had failed to win any of their previous 16 matches at AFCON finals, showed hunger and composure as they outclassed Gabon in an entertaining encounter at the Stade d’Agadir.
Goals from Faizal Bangal, Geny Catamo, and Diogo Calila sealed the famous win for Chiquinho Conde’s side, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alex Moucketou-Moussounda scored for Gabon.
Mozambique took the lead in the 37th minute through Bangal, who headed home from a corner. Catamo doubled the advantage five minutes later from the penalty spot after a foul in the box.
Gabon pulled one back in first-half stoppage time when Aubameyang reacted quickest to a rebound to keep his side in the contest.
However, Mozambique restored their two-goal cushion early in the second half, with Calila heading home in the 52nd minute after a fine delivery from Witi.
Gabon mounted a late fightback when Moucketou-Moussounda capitalised on a loose ball from a corner in the 76th minute, setting up a tense finish.
Despite sustained pressure in the closing stages, Mozambique held on to secure a landmark victory that boosts their chances of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
The result leaves Mozambique level on points with Cameroon and the Ivory Coast in Group F, while Gabon now faces a must-win clash against the Ivory Coast in their final group match.
