AFCON 2025: Uche Ikpeazu explains decision to represent Uganda over Nigeria

Quick Read

The striker’s decision has attracted attention across the continent, highlighting the growing trend of dual-nationality players choosing opportunities with other nations.

Nigerian-born striker Uche Ikpeazu has opened up on his decision to represent Uganda at the 1XBET Africa Cup of Nations 2025, revealing why he opted for the Cranes over his homeland, the Super Eagles.

The revelation comes ahead of Uganda’s crucial final Group C encounter against Nigeria on Tuesday in Fez.

Speaking to journalists at the Sportive de Fez training ground, Ikpeazu said that the sheer depth of talent in the Nigerian national team made it challenging for him to secure a regular spot.

“Nigeria has an abundance of quality players. Competing with talents like Victor Osimhen and Akor meant it would have been extremely difficult for me to earn consistent playing time with the Super Eagles,” he explained.

Ikpeazu expressed his excitement and determination to help Uganda make a mark at the tournament.

“We are fired up and focused. Beating Nigeria is a big motivation for us.

Honestly, I wouldn’t even have the opportunity to play at this AFCON if I hadn’t made the choice to represent Uganda,” he added.

Despite his commitment to the Cranes, Ikpeazu revealed that he still cherishes his Nigerian roots.

“I miss home-cooked Nigerian meals like Eba, Ogbono, and egusi soup,” he admitted, adding that he grew up in Lagos idolizing football legends such as Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu. “Watching them play inspired me to pursue football seriously,” he said.
