Four electronics shops in a building at Ikotun, Lagos State, were gutted by fire in the early hours of New Year’s Day, destroying all items in the affected shops.

The shops are located in a building beside the GUO Transport Company, Ikotun.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that items destroyed in the fire included washing machines, television sets and power generators.

A resident who lives near the building told NAN that neighbours were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the structure.

He said residents used large quantities of water in an attempt to contain the fire before officials of the Lagos State Fire Service arrived.

He commended the firefighters for their prompt response, which helped to extinguish the fire and stop it from razing the entire building.

“If not for their timely intervention, the whole building would have been burnt and the fire would have affected our own,” he said.

The resident added that he could not ascertain the exact cause of the fire but suspected a faulty electrical circuit.

NAN reports that the affected area was cordoned off, and no casualties were recorded.

It was also reported that the Great Nigeria Insurance building on Lagos Island and the Army Arena Market in Oshodi had been gutted by fire within the past eight days.
