Anambra State government has accused Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, of committing “abomination” by accepting a chieftaincy title from one Chief Austin Ndigwe who is falsely parading himself as the traditional ruler of Awka.

The state government, in a statement by its commissioner for Local Government, Communities and Chieftaincy Matters, Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne accused the widow of the leader of defunct Biafra, the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu of accepting title from Ndigwe when he was aware of his status as an impersonator.

Nwabunwanne accused Ojukwu of committing “abomination” and undermining the state traditional institution by accepting a chieftaincy title from the fake traditional ruler.

The commissioner said Amb. Ojukwu ‘s action was as an “affront” to the Anambra State government because she is a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) government in the state.

He added that Bianca Ojukwu also knew that it is the policy of the state government that only a traditional ruler of a community duly recognised and issued with a certificate of recognition by the state government has the powers to conference Chieftaincy title on any person.”

The commissioner further noted that Anambra guidelines enacted by the state assembly stipulated that only persons who are indigenes or residents of the community, can be conferred with a traditional title.

“To confer title on a non-native or resident of a community the traditional ruler must confirm in writing that such person is a person of good character and the chieftaincy conferment would also be approved by the state Ministry of Local Government, Communities and Chieftaincy Matters,” the commissioner said.

However, the Anambra state government said Amb. Ojukwu did not comply with the above stipulated guidelines before presenting herself to Chief Ndigwe who falsely claimed in his official letterhead paper to be “HRM, Eze-Uzu 111 of Awka” to confer her with a “fake” traditional title of “Anyanwu N’ etilu Ora” during his performance of “Igo Aro” festival.

On the contrary, Anambra State government said its recognized traditional ruler for Awka is His Royal Highness, Obi Gibson Nwosu (Eze-Uzu 11) who at age 92, is still “alive and agile” despite battling with sight challenges.

The Commissioner added that Obi Gibson Nwosu was a reputable retired Air- force officer who flew fighter jet solo on the side of Biara during the civil war, and, was even exiled for 15 years with the Biafran leader at Ivory coast and later in Zimbabwe.

He also noted that Obi Gibson Nwosu had in 2025 conferred a Chieftaincy title of “Omenife Awka” on President Bola Tinubu during the latter’s official visit to the state.

He also noted that Governor Chukwuma Soludo was forced sometime few years ago to warn Ndigwe to stop parading himself as the traditional ruler of Awka.

“As a responsible government we must take a necessary steps to protect our traditional institution from any assault”, the Commissioner added.
