Panic broke out on Tuesday afternoon after a Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) vehicle was engulfed by fire along the Third Mainland Bridge, causing heavy traffic congestion and anxiety among motorists.

The incident, which occurred at about 1:00 p.m., was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in a statement shared on its official X handle.

According to the agency, the high-capacity bus caught fire around the Adekunle axis of the bridge, inwards Iyana Oworo.

Videos accompanying the post showed the BRT bus completely engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing into the air as motorists slowed down or diverted in fear.

Although no casualties were recorded, the incident triggered a severe traffic gridlock stretching from Adekunle towards Iyana Oworo.

“A high-capacity bus is on fire on the Third Mainland Bridge, by Adekunle, inwards Iyana Oworo, affecting traffic,” LASTMA stated.

“Efforts are ongoing to put out the fire, and our officers are on scene managing the traffic situation.”

Further updates from the traffic agency showed the arrival of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, whose firefighters worked to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to nearby vehicles.

Traffic officials were seen directing vehicles away from the affected section of the bridge while emergency responders battled the blaze.

The cause of the fire had not been disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
