Lagos announces resumption date for public, private schools

The Lagos State Government has announced Monday, January 12, 2026, as the official resumption date for the second term of the 2025/2026 academic session for all public and private schools across the state.

The directive, which also applies to government technical colleges, is in line with the approved Lagos State schools’ academic calendar, the government said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the announcement, all schools are expected to commence academic and administrative activities immediately upon resumption, as the state moves to ensure a smooth continuation of the school year.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, urged school authorities to strictly comply with approved public health and safety guidelines as pupils and students return to classrooms.

He disclosed that government monitoring teams have been deployed across the state to inspect schools and ensure adherence to safety standards, stressing that compliance would not be optional.

“All educational institutions must adhere strictly to the necessary public health protocols for the reopening of schools,” the commissioner said, adding that the inspections are aimed at safeguarding the wellbeing of students, teachers and non-teaching staff.

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education also expressed appreciation to teachers, parents and guardians for their sustained cooperation, noting that their support remains critical to maintaining stability in the education sector.

Parents and guardians were further encouraged to ensure that pupils and students are adequately prepared for the new term, both academically and socially, as schools resume full academic activities.

The resumption date marks the official return of academic activities across Lagos schools following the end-of-year break.
