Avon Medical Practice has strengthened its critical-care capacity with the unveiling of a newly enhanced Intensive Care Unit (ICU), following a ₦200 million investment aimed at delivering advanced, world-class medical care within Nigeria.
The upgraded ICU, housed in the hospital’s recently commissioned building extension, significantly boosts Avon Medical’s ability to manage high-acuity and life-threatening cases that require specialised intervention and continuous monitoring. The facility is designed to reduce medical tourism by providing internationally comparable critical-care services locally.
The unit operates round-the-clock with a multidisciplinary team led by a consultant intensivist. Staffing includes three intensive-care physicians, three critical-care nurses working in rotation, three nursing assistants and a pool of on-call specialists, ensuring uninterrupted expert care for critically ill patients.
It is equipped to handle complex conditions such as severe respiratory failure, post-operative complications, sepsis, cardiac emergencies and multi-organ dysfunction. The facility features advanced mechanical ventilators with multi-mode capabilities, continuous vital-signs monitoring systems, multiple infusion pumps and syringe drivers, defibrillators, ECG machines, blood warmers and specialist ICU beds fitted with pressure-relieving air mattresses. Additional installations include a medical-grade air-filtration system, efficient patient-transport infrastructure and low-pressure bedding systems to prevent bed sores.
Speaking on the development, the Chief Executive Officer of Avon Medical Practice, Akinbiyi Oke, said the new ICU underscores the organisation’s commitment to closing gaps in specialised healthcare delivery.
According to him, the investment positions Avon Medical to respond swiftly and precisely to critical emergencies, while ensuring Nigerians can access world-class care without travelling abroad.
The Head of Clinical Services, Olubunmi Salako, noted that the ICU team has undergone extensive training in advanced life-support systems and critical-care protocols. She said the upgraded unit enables the hospital to deliver evidence-based care aligned with international best practices, supported by continuous expert supervision.
The ICU is accessible 24 hours a day through the Accident and Emergency Department and caters to both private-paying and insured patients.
Avon Medical Practice is a 50-bed multi-speciality healthcare provider with facilities that include a full-service hospital, on-site clinics, a dialysis centre, pharmacy and laboratory services. The organisation says it remains committed to delivering affordable, high-quality healthcare and improving access to specialised medical services across Nigeria and beyond.
