Quick Read

Nigeria’s attacking spearheads, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, will take centre stage when the Super Eagles confront Algeria in Saturday’s 1XBET Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final in Marrakesh, with the duo primed to end the remarkable clean-sheet run of Desert Foxes goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

For Osimhen and Lookman, two former African Footballer of the Year winners who have terrorised defences throughout the tournament, the task is clear: breach the last remaining perfect defensive record among the AFCON quarter-finalists.

Zidane, the 27-year-old son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane, remains the only first-choice goalkeeper in the last eight yet to concede a goal in Morocco. However, standing between him and continued perfection is Nigeria’s most potent attacking partnership, a duo that has already accounted for six goals at the competition.

Osimhen and Lookman have been central to Nigeria’s free-scoring run, with the Super Eagles emerging as the tournament’s leading scorers with 12 goals. Their pace, movement and ruthless finishing have unsettled even the most organised backlines, and they now pose the sternest examination yet of Zidane’s composure and shot-stopping credentials.

Zidane kept clean sheets in Algeria’s group matches against Sudan and Burkina Faso, before being rested for the final group game against Equatorial Guinea. He returned between the posts in the round-of-16 encounter against DR Congo and once again emerged unbreached as Algeria secured a dramatic extra-time victory.

The spotlight on Zidane has been intense, not least because of his famous surname. Former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane, alongside his wife and another son, has been a regular presence in the stands whenever Luca has featured for Algeria at this tournament.

“It is special when your family come to watch,” Zidane said after one of his outings. “But I try to stay focused on my job.”

The Granada goalkeeper, who began his professional career with Real Madrid’s reserve side in 2016, has insisted that he is determined to carve out his own identity.

“I try to be myself and build my career step by step,” he said. “I am proud to represent Algeria and to be playing at the Africa Cup of Nations.”

Born in France, Zidane represented his country of birth at several youth levels and was also eligible to play for Spain or Algeria, where his grandparents were born. He eventually chose the Desert Foxes, making his senior debut in a 2026 World Cup qualifying win over Uganda last November. Injury to first-choice goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz handed him the AFCON starting role — an opportunity he has seized with both hands.

Yet, his toughest challenge now looms against an in-form Nigerian frontline.

Osimhen’s relentless pressing and aerial dominance, combined with Lookman’s flair, intelligence and eye for goal, have powered Nigeria’s march to the last eight. Alongside Akor Adams, the Super Eagles’ attack has been the most feared unit in the competition.

While Algeria arrive with confidence under Bosnian coach Vladimir Petkovic, having shaken off recent AFCON disappointments, Nigeria’s pedigree and firepower ensure that Saturday’s contest promises fireworks.

The Super Eagles, however, are not without concerns. Despite their attacking prowess, they have conceded four goals — the highest tally among the quarter-finalists — something head coach Eric Chelle will be keen to address as the stakes rise.

For Osimhen and Lookman, though, the focus will be firmly on goal. Ending Zidane’s flawless run would not only send Nigeria into the semi-finals but also reinforce their status as genuine title contenders in Morocco.

Kick-off at the Stade de Marrakech is scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time on Saturday, with one of Africa’s fiercest rivalries set to add another compelling chapter.
