Tragedy struck Kano State on Wednesday as a two-year-old boy and a 28-year-old man lost their lives in separate drowning incidents involving open wells in different communities.
The first incident occurred in Kwankwaso town, Madobi Local Government Area, where a toddler identified as Sa’idu Ahmad reportedly fell into a well on Wednesday afternoon.
According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, the service received an emergency call at about 12:15 p.m.
Abdullahi said a rescue team was immediately dispatched to the scene after the alert was received from the Deputy Director of the Fire Service, Rabiu Garba.
The child was retrieved from the well unconscious and subsequently handed over to the Madobi Police Division. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.
In a separate development the same day, a 28-year-old man, Suleiman Sani, also drowned after falling into a well at Karofawa Yan Kifi Village in Ghari Local Government Area.
Abdullahi explained that the Ghari Fire Station received a distress call later in the evening, prompting another swift rescue operation.
Although the victim was brought out of the well unconscious, he was later confirmed dead by his parents.
His remains were handed over to the village head of Karofawa, Alhaji Musa Aliyu, while investigations into the cause of the incident continue.
The Kano State Fire Service expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged residents to take safety precautions, particularly by ensuring that wells are properly covered, to prevent similar tragedies.
